Three decades ago, a group of pro-active concerned citizens in Los Alamos, New Mexico came together to lay the groundwork for our community’s own senior care needs. It began with a grass roots effort to build a comprehensive skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. Funds were raised in the community. The County government provided land and issued revenue bonds. In 1984, Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center opened its doors.
In the years that followed, Los Alamos Retirement Community (LARC) continued to operate as a hands-on, not-for-profit community organization with its own local Board of Directors. And, as a result of the community’s ideas and financial support, Aspen Ridge Lodge–our state-of-the-art assisted living facility–came into being.
Today, LARC continues to be dedicated to supporting these two exceptional facilities for the seniors of our community and surrounding areas.
